Day 15 - Anointed in Obscurity

Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:11-13 - “11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” 12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.”

God anointed David in a place no one thought to look. He was not invited to the room. He was not considered a candidate. Yet God called him by name while he was tending sheep.

Obscurity does not disqualify you. It often confirms you. God sees what systems overlook. He identifies faithfulness long before position is granted.

David was anointed before he was appointed. The oil came first. The platform came later. Obedience in obscurity prepared him for leadership under pressure.

Ask yourself honestly: How am I stewarding the season I am in right now? God anoints in private so that identity is settled before exposure arrives. When affirmation is delayed, humility is formed.

Reflection: Where has God asked you to remain faithful without recognition?

Prayer: God, help me serve with integrity where You have placed me. Anchor my identity in You, not position. Prepare me for what You see, not what others see.

Practice:

  • Serve intentionally today in a role that feels unseen. Do it with excellence and gratitude.

God sees you. Even in obscurity.
